3 Reasons Why Being Vegan Is Super Manly

The vegan lifestyle seemingly became the 2017 craze. Eat plants, not animals! Everywhere you go, people ask their waitrons, “Is there dairy in this? What about gluten?”

Men have started to jump on the plant-based bandwagon as well. However, there’s always been a stigma: In order to be “manly,” one must consume animal protein.

This makes sense. Animals and their byproducts are tremendous sources of protein. This is inarguable. Yet, it’s also a tremendous source of carcinogens, cholesterol, and lactose….so, yeah.

Below are three reasons why going plant-based improves your masculinity:

Defeat Debilitating Diseases

On a vegan diet, you decrease risk for ailments that take your life too soon. While it was manly to die early in the Middle Ages via battle, it’s definitely not manly to lose your life via diabetes or heart disease.

According to diabetes.co.uk, “By eating a healthy vegan diet low in cholesterol and saturated fat, but balanced enough to include fibre and protein, blood glucose levels can be made easier to control.” With zero cholesterol and leveled blood glucose, you decrease the risk of Type 2 diabetes, which is becoming an epidemic in the obese United States.

In fact, some cases have been reported where people who have Type 2 reversed their diabetes by switching to a plant-based diet (forksoverknives.com).

Talk about heroic! #HeManStatus

As for heart disease - the #1 killer in the U.S. - multiple studies claim changing to a vegetarian or vegan diet usually leads to “less coronary plaque and fewer cardiac events” compared to a standard American diet (appropriately acronymed S.A.D.; collective-evolution.com).

Ditching the red meat and eggs that raise cholesterol and aid in plaque sticking to in your bloodstream leads to a longer and healthier life.

Can’t get more manly than living past your prime!

Do More in a Day

When you consume a healthy vegan diet, you can expect boosts in your energy. (You can still be unhealthy and vegan...Mr. Only-Eats-Potatoes.)

Everybody has needs when it comes to vitamins and minerals. This is true whether you’re a plant- or meat-eater. However, when you switch to eating mostly plants, your body requires less energy to digest food, seeing as it doesn’t have to break down complex animal molecules. According to Elite Daily, “Plant-based proteins from leafy greens, legumes, and seeds are easily digestible, packed with fiber and energizing properties that can make you feel more alert.”

However, if you don’t get sufficient protein, you will experience a dip in energy. Thankfully, your body needs a relatively low amount of protein, contrary to all the gym bros.

A real man doesn’t need 180 grams of chicken breast and egg whites; he needs about 80-100 grams of spinach and legumes.

Also, if the majority of your nutrition consists of plants, you get a spike in testosterone. Broccoli, avocados, bananas, nuts, seeds, and garlic contain vitamins and minerals that both lower estrogen levels and raise testosterone, or other chemicals that aid in testosterone production (muscleandfitness.com).

Even soy, long known for its estrogenic properties, is a common source of protein for vegans and does not alter T levels in men.

So don’t be afraid, guys - order that soy cappuccino with confidence!

Gone Goes the Gas

dairy.jpeg20% of humans are lactose intolerant, meaning their bodies can’t digest the sugar lactose found in dairy products. Left undigested, lactose “can lead to the production of gas, bloating, diarrhea, and stomach discomfort” (badgut.org). Milk, cheese, butter, cream...your body hates it, and results in excess flatulence.

Now, in all honesty, when you transition from omnivore to herbivore, you will experience excess gas due to the digestion of more legumes and vegetables. But that will soon pass. Once you are fully indoctrinated in a vegan diet, your body will adjust to the addition of natural fiber.

Feel better, fart less, go vegan.

“Men eat meat.” A large stereotype now feels like a cliche - outdated and uninspiring.

Let’s shake things up dudes. Let’s live longer, be more energetic, and have happier stomachs.

Men are what they eat. If you go for junk food, you’ll feel like junk. If you eat cholesterol, plaque, and pus, prepare for diabetes and heart disease. If you eat foods from the soil, you’ll feel like your natural self.

And every MAN should feel this way.
