Check out some of the best
Personal Development Resources
we've ever come across.
We're all about taking control of your life and molding it into what you want. This curated collection of products will give you the tools, information, or training you need to get the job done whether you're looking to learn a new skill, land a new job, be a better leader, or improve your social skills.
These are all products, books, tools, and services we have tested and believe in.
If you turn to good ol' Google for personal development resources, you're going to see a lot of ads and a lot of landing pages that are desperate to get you to spare some change. We're not trying to sell you on our own services. We're just trying to connect you with the things we've tried and think you might like and benefit from.
We're going to be continually updating our directory as we try out new products and services, so be sure to come back again soon to see what else is new. Eventually, we'll break our recommendations down into specific subcategories– like wellness, productivity, finance, style, and leadership– so that you can only look at what is most relevant to you. For now, we'll keep everything consolidated here so that you don't end up jumping over to a page that only has like two things on it. That'd just be grim.
- Isn't there already a "shop" subdomain of this site?
We 100% encourage folks to go over to https://shop.selfhimprovement.com. That's where you can find Big Picture Living, and it's the first item we added to this page.
But, we aren't the only folks out there with products that we think you'll like and benefit from using. There are dozens of other brands, products, services, and more that can help you build the life you want, whether that means learning to manage your money better, dressing for the job you want, developing your leadership skills, or learning to be more comfortable in your body.
This storefront is meant to introduce you to some of the products and tools we've used, enjoyed, and recommend. We only link out to products that we've tried and can endorse ourselves because we only want to recommend products we know you'll like, and which are aligned with our goals of authentically empowering folks to be the masters of their own lives.
- What is the verified icon by some items?
If an item is marked as "verified" and has the below icon with it, that means we've written a full review of that product, service, course, or app. Clicking on the verified icon will take you to our review so that you can get all the nitty-gritty details.
- Is this just a dump of affiliate links?
Nope! We only recommend products we like and use regularly. Many of these items may link out to affiliate pages where we can earn a commission off of the sales that are made, but we aren't just haphazardly grabbing links to shove at you to try to make a little money. If we wouldn't spend our own money on it, we wouldn't advise you to do the same.
Besides, the margins on affiliate marketing are low. If we were going to be scammy to earn cash, we'd become an MLM hun or something (just kidding– that will never happen).

Upgrade Your Gummy Vitamins to a Supplement that Gets the Job Done
I've been drinking Athletic Greens daily for over a year. I love the stuff! The taste does take a little getting used to– it's not bad, just earthy– but the benefits certainly outweigh that. It fills the gaps in my diet, keeps me regular, and starts my day off right. You can get your greens here or read our full review using the link below.
Dress Well Without Venturing to the Mall (And Get a $25 Credit Toward Your First Order)
As much as I love to dress well, I had confessedly let my wardrobe get outdated. I hate sorting through clothes racks at the mall and it's hard to find things that fit me well, so I wore the clothes that my mom bought me in college well into my late 20s. By the time they were in need of being replaced, I decided to give Stitch Fix a try and holy heck am I glad that I did. Their stylists understood exactly what I wanted from my style profile quiz, and everything has fit wonderfully. You're in control to determine what you need and how much you're comfortable spending, and then they'll do the rest. It's easy, convenient, customized to your tastes, and so fun to get new fixes. If you sign up using my referral link below, you'll get a $25 credit toward your first order.
Ultimate Leadership w/ Keith Ferrazzi
How To Be A Transformational Leader In Today’s New Era Of Collaboration & Authenticity
Leadership is one of those "soft" skills that can make or break you in the professional world. Very few people are natural-born leaders. Most of us have to learn how to be effective in leadership roles, and this course is a great way to approach that. It's very comprehensive, which is why it's a bit pricy, but it's packed with a lot of great material and is meant to be broken up over several weeks.
Bodybuilding.com Signature Micronized Glutamine
Great for Muscle Recovery (& Your Bowels)
Price: $20 normally, currently $14
I added micronized glutamine to my workout regimen in mid-2020. I'm very glad I did. It's an amino acid, and it helps with muscle recovery as well as gut health. The flavor isn't great by itself, but when mixed with a pre-workout supplement or put into a protein shake, it's not noticeable.
Bodybuilding.com Signature Creatine
"Off-brand" but On-Point for Gains
Price: $12 normally, currently on sale for $8
If you lift, you probably already take creatine. I'm a fan of the bodybuilding.com signature brand because it's effective, it's affordable, and it dissolves well. It may not be a name brand like some of the more popular variety, but it gets the job done and doesn't break the bank.
Designing Your Life: How to Build a Well-Lived, Joyful Life
Use Design Thinking To Help You Become Unstuck- A Course by Bill Burnett & Dave Evans
Price: $199 normally, currently $29
Burnett and Evans' book by the same name– Designing Your Life– was one of my favorite reads of 2020. I absolutely love the book (also on this list) and this course is a great way to get access to the same information in a new and dynamic way. Burnett and Evans both have backgrounds as teachers, so they know how to teach their lessons effectively. A lot of Self-Himprovement's philosophy on personal development is based on their work, so we highly endorse this course!
Workflow, Time Management and Productivity for Creatives
Bust myths about creative whimsy and self-sabotage with this low-cost, high-impact course with Lisa Congdon.
Price: $49 normally, currently $15
Writers, painters, actors, dancers, and artists of all kinds... they're just a bunch of flighty, unreliable chumps, right?
WRONG. At least, not after they've taken this course
If you take your creativity seriously– whether you're wanting to monetize your hobbies or just hone your craft– learning to manage your time and be more productive is key, and that's what this course teaches you to do.
Stash (Investing App)
You don't have to understand stocks to own them with Stash (and get $20 toward stocks with my referral link).
Stash makes investing easy. You can put any spare cash you have available into Stash, and then invest it in a variety of ETFs and Mutual Funds. This means that rather than buying shares of 1 specific company, you're buying into funds that own shares of multiple companies. ETFs are often better choices for beginner investors and generally offer strong returns. Plus, you can invest in ETFs based upon what's important to you– low risk, the environment, equal opportunity employers, cannabis, data security, and more.
Farther (Financial Planning)
Expert, independent advice, empowered by modern technology.
Farther streamlines your financial management. Backed by powerful technology and shaped around financial management, Farther makes it more accessible for everyone– not just the rich and powerful- to actively manage their finances without being overwhelmed by huge time commitments and complex jargon.
You Are a Badass at Making Money: Master the Mindset of Wealth
"A cheerful manifesto on removing obstacles between yourself and the income of your dreams." --New York Magazine
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of You Are a Badass(R), a life-changing guide to making the kind of money you've only ever dreamed of.
You Are a Badass at Making Money will launch you past the fears and stumbling blocks that have kept financial success beyond your reach. Drawing on her own transformation--over just a few years--from a woman living in a converted garage with tumbleweeds blowing through her bank account to a woman who travels the world in style, Jen Sincero channels the inimitable sass and practicality that made You Are a Badass an indomitable bestseller. She combines hilarious personal essays with bite-size, aha concepts that unlock earning potential and get real results.
I find that it relies a bit too heavily on the Law of Attraction (which I, personally, have qualms with), but it's still an interesting read and a helpful tool for reframing the way that we think about money. I mentioned this book in Season 1, Episode 13 of the Finding Fulfillment Podcast.
- Uncover what's holding you back from making money
- Give your doubts, fears, and excuses the heave-ho
- Relate to money in a new (and lucrative) way
- Shake up the cocktail of creation
- Tap into your natural ability to grow rich
- Shape your reality--stop playing victim to circumstance
- Get as wealthy as you wanna be
Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain
A groundbreaking and fascinating investigation into the transformative effects of exercise on the brain, from the bestselling author and renowned psychiatrist John J. Ratey, MD.
This has been one of my favorite reads of the last few years. I started going to the gym regularly as a way to help regulate my mental health and deal with chronic stress. Now, I'm hooked. Reading through Spark has really solidified my understanding of the benefits I've experienced by working out, and it has given me a much greater insight into the complexities of fitness. We live in a culture where exercise is reduced to a means of getting thin, and that is dangerous for all of us.
From the book's description,
Did you know you can beat stress, lift your mood, fight memory loss, sharpen your intellect, and function better than ever simply by elevating your heart rate and breaking a sweat? The evidence is incontrovertible: Aerobic exercise physically remodels our brains for peak performance.
In Spark, John J. Ratey, M.D., embarks upon a fascinating and entertaining journey through the mind-body connection, presenting startling research to prove that exercise is truly our best defense against everything from depression to ADD to addiction to aggression to menopause to Alzheimer's.
Filled with amazing case studies (such as the revolutionary fitness program in Naperville, Illinois, which has put this school district of 19,000 kids first in the world of science test scores), Spark is the first book to explore comprehensively the connection between exercise and the brain. It will change forever the way you think about your morning run -- -or, for that matter, simply the way you think.
Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance
In this instant New York Times bestseller, Angela Duckworth shows anyone striving to succeed that the secret to outstanding achievement is not talent, but a special blend of passion and persistence she calls "grit." "Inspiration for non-geniuses everywhere" (People).
I first listened to this book as an audiobook during my drive out to Los Angeles. Ironically, that was a point in my life where I wasn't particularly gritty and didn't have the focus needed to make LA work. Regardless, this book is elucidating and engaging, exploring the nuances of why some people have a hearty sticktoitiveness and others do not.
It's not that some people are just born with more willpower. Instead, they thrive on being the underdog and coming out on the other side successful. Duckworth's analysis of the psychology behind grit will change the way you think about making it in the world forever.
Change Maker: Turn Your Passion for Health and Fitness Into a Powerful Purpose and a Wildly Successful Career
The health and fitness industry is huge, highly competitive, and often confusing to navigate. This one-of-a-kind book helps you make sense of the chaos, laying out a clear roadmap for career success--for both established professionals and anyone just getting started.
Dr. John Berardi is the founder of Precision Nutrition, one of the leading nutrition certification programs and nutrition coach training providers in the world. In spite of this, Change Maker is not all about body-building diets, getting ripped, or why keto sucks (but trust me, it does). Instead, this is a book about how you, as a leader, can transform your knowledge and passion into a powerful, influential force. Whether you're starting your own company, dipping your toes into coaching or consulting, or curious about navigating the fitness and wellness industries, this book is a must-read.
Mind Hacking: How to Change Your Mind for Good in 21 Days
Get out of your own way and start making your life what it ought to be!
A seasoned author, comedian, and entrepreneur, Sir John Hargrave once suffered from unhealthy addictions, anxiety, and poor mental health. After cracking the code to unlocking his mind's full and balanced potential, his entire life changed for the better. In Mind Hacking, Hargrave reveals the formula that allowed him to overcome negativity and eliminate mental problems at their core.
Through a 21-day, 3-step training program, this book lays out a simple yet comprehensive approach to help you rewire your brain and achieve healthier thought patterns for a better quality of life. It hinges on the repetitive steps of analyzing, imagining, and reprogramming to help break down barriers preventing you from reaching your highest potential.
By treating your brain as a computer and mastering Hargrave's mind hacking formula, you, too, can create a positive, permanent shift in your thinking, leading to personal and professional triumphs in all areas of life.
Designing Your Life: How to Build a Well-Lived, Joyful Life
At last, a book that shows you how to build--design--a life you can thrive in, at any age or stage
So much of my approach with the content here on Self-Himprovement is based upon what I learned in this book. This is one of those books that I recommend to my friends all the time. It's a look at how you can think like a designer and iterate on your hypotheses to create a life for yourself that is meaningful, rewarding, and fulfilling. What I like about it most is that it's not a fluff book-- it's not stuffed with empty platitudes and out-of-touch opportunism like so much else in the self-help genre. It's actionable, insightful, and encourages readers to actually take the next steps that they need to take in order to build their life the way they deserve.
The Designing Your Life Workbook: A Framework for Building a Life You Can Thrive in
An Interactive companion to a book that's already wonderful.
I've spoken at length about how much I enjoyed the book for which this workbook is a companion. In particular, I've highlighted how actionable the Designing Your Life book is. If you're the type of person who benefits from having a little bit extra framework and structure as you're preparing to take action, then this book needs to be in your possession. That's exactly what this book does– it helps you take the insightful material from the book and turn it into a hands-on plan of action an inspiration.
Someday (is Not a Day in the Week)
I know the author of this book personally, and it is as delightful as she is (which is to say, it's REALLY delightful).
Full of inspirational insights and advice, lifehacks, and real-world examples, Someday is Not a Day in the Week is CEO Sam Horn's motivational guide to help readers get what they want in life today rather than "someday."
- Working, working, working?
- Busy taking care of everyone but yourself?
- Wondering what to do with the rest of your life?
- Planning to do what makes you happy someday when you have more time, money, or freedom?
What if someday never happens? As the Buddha said, "The thing is, we think we have time."
The surprising insights about what makes people happy or unhappy, what they're doing about it (or not), and why...will inspire you to carve out time for what truly matters now, not later.
Life is much too precious to postpone. It's time to put yourself in your own story. The good news is, there are "hacks" you can do right now to make your life more of what you want it to be. And you don't have to be selfish, quit your job, or win the lottery to do them. Sam Horn offers actionable, practical advice in short, snappy chapters to show you how to get started on your best life -- now.
The School of Greatness: A Real-World Guide to Living Bigger, Loving Deeper, and Leaving a Legacy
How do you define greatness? Are you living up to that definition?
When a career-ending injury left elite athlete and professional football player Lewis Howes out of work and living on his sister's couch, he decided he needed to make a change for the better. He started by reaching out to people he admired, searching for mentors, and applying his past coaches' advice from sports to life off the field. Lewis did more than bounce back: He built a multimillion-dollar online business and is now a sought-after business coach, speaker, and podcast host.
In The School of Greatness, Howes shares the essential tips and habits he gathered in interviewing the greats on his wildly popular podcast of the same name. In discussion with people like Olympic gold medalist Shawn Johnson and Pencils of Promise CEO Adam Braun, Howes figured out that greatness is unearthed and cultivated from within. The masters of greatness are not successful because they got lucky or are innately more talented, but because they applied specific habits and tools to embrace and overcome adversity in their lives.
Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones
Habits can make or break us. Luckily, we can also make or break habits! This book covers how.
No matter your goals, Atomic Habits offers a proven framework for improving--every day. James Clear, one of the world's leading experts on habit formation, reveals practical strategies that will teach you exactly how to form good habits, break bad ones, and master the tiny behaviors that lead to remarkable results.
If you're having trouble changing your habits, the problem isn't you. The problem is your system. Bad habits repeat themselves again and again not because you don't want to change, but because you have the wrong system for change. You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems. Here, you'll get a proven system that can take you to new heights.
Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear
A must read for anyone hoping to live a creative life... I dare you not to be inspired to be brave, to be free, and to be curious." --PopSugar
This is my #1 favorite book of the last decade. That's not an exaggeration. I once wrote a business proposal to convince my company to fly me out to Boston for a conference solely because Liz Gilbert was also going to be there. I now have a signed copy of Big Magic on my bookshelf and I cannot think of a possession I prize more than it.
Whether or not you want to be a "professional" creative, this book is a must-read for anybody who wants to learn more about what it means to live a fulfilling life and embrace the things about which you are passionate. I would not be here managing this website today if it weren't for this book.
