Underwear 101

Underwear is important. Each day, it’s the first thing you put on and the last thing you take off, and it’s the article of clothing that can most easily make or break your day– if your underwear isn’t comfortable, you’re not going to be comfortable.

So when it comes to underwear, you need to make sure you’re wearing them right. If you want to feel confident whether your underwear is hidden beneath a three piece suit or hurriedly coming off, knowing how to dress to your body is key. Basing your underwear purchasing decisions on cut, color, and fabric– and not on the tradition of what you've always worn– is going to set you up for success.

And don’t worry. We’re here to help with that.

When you’re strolling through the underwear aisles in your local department store, you’re going to have quite a few options: briefs, trunks, boxer briefs, jockstraps, boxers, thongs, and, depending upon the stores you shop at, strips of fabric and elastic in an origami array that covers a grand total of your glans and single testicle.

While this may seem like an overwhelming number of options, we’ll make this simple for you: you should probably go with either briefs or trunks.

Both briefs and trunks are sensible enough to be worn on a daily basis, but they can still have the sex appeal and attractiveness to be worn on special occasions. There’s nothing wrong with having other options on hand, of course, and if you feel more confident and comfortable in something more revealing, by all means go for it! Many guys just aren’t going to want to have that level of exposure on a daily basis.

Briefs get a bad rap because too many guys associate them with outdated tighty whities, but that’s not the case any more. Go with a low-rise waisted brief for a very modern, sexy look. Briefs will make your legs look longer and leaner. They provide coverage and support where it matters, but won’t restrain your legs. If you have muscular legs, briefs are going to be your best friend. Muscly legs deserve to be shown off, and you don’t have to worry about briefs squeezing them too tightly.

Trunks are arguably the underwear en vogue of our day. They’re incredibly popular with many guys and for good reason. Trunks provide coverage and support like briefs, but cover more of the thigh. For guys who don’t like the degree of exposure that comes with briefs, trunks are a great choice. They won’t make your legs look quite as long as briefs do, but they’re also not a silhouette that will cut your leg off and make them look shorter.

When it comes to color, I like to think about underwear in the same way that I think about shirts. It’s best to have your staple colors, like black and white, but don’t be afraid to have a variety of colors as well.

With your underwear, you can go with almost any color or pattern… with the exception of two rules:

  1. Complement your skin tone
  2. Don’t wear overly graphic/ cartoon underwear

Complementing your skin tone requires you to to think about contrast. For example, my skin is pasty and pale (especially in the underwear zones), with pink tones. As such, it would practically be a sin for me to wear any kind of pastel pink or orange underwear. Dark colors, however? They’re going to contrast with my skin and pop. Similarly, guys with dark skin can make tighty whities or bold colors look like works of art.

As for graphic print underwear, well, it’s fine for relaxing at home, but it should typically be avoided during situations in which someone else may be seeing your underwear. Patterns or designs are fine, but the Scooby Doo boxers you got when you were sixteen or the novelty thong you bought after watching Borat belong in your dresser instead of on your body. If they make you happy, keep them! Wear them! Celebrate them! But, keep in mind that they’re not very fashion forward, and if you’re wanting to make a good impression in your undies, go with something a bit more solid.

Knowing how to pick the right fabric is an important skill to have when it comes to being comfortable in your undies. In the same way that there are dozens of options for the style of underwear you can buy, the options for fabric are abundant.

You’ve got cotton, cotton blends, poly, modal, micromodal, silk, poly blends, and so on and so forth. Essentially, what this means is that you have options for figuring out what works best for you and your body.

For most guys, a basic cotton or cotton-elastane blend is going to make the most sense. Cotton is durable, soft, and relatively cheap. It’s also a natural fiber that breathes well, meaning that you’re not as likely to get too hot and swampy down there.

That being said, cotton’s main downside is that it can hold onto moisture. So, if you’re going to be working out or sweating a lot, it would be best to go for a sport fabric. These are usually a polyester blend, and tend to be packaged as moisture wicking. Many of these fabrics are very clingy and can get uncomfortable after a while, but are invaluable while exercising.

Polyester or other fabrics that have a high degree of stretch (elastane blends, typically) can also be great for guys who wear packers on a regular basis since they hold their shape well and typically do a good job of holding everything in place while still being comfortable.

If you have it in your budget, micromodal is a great choice for maximizing your comfort (seriously… that stuff feels like an angel is wrapping its wings around your best friend); just keep in mind that it’s typically going to be a hefty investment, which may not make it the best choice for everybody.
