Greens Supplements: What Superfood Supplement is Right for You?

Greens superfood supplements are an easy way to get your daily intake of fruits and vegetables in one drink. They are also a great way for people who might not be able to eat enough produce each day to ensure they are getting the nutrients that their body needs.

Greens supplements have been around since the 1990s, but it wasn't until recently that they became popular as more people began looking for ways to improve their health.

Having tried out dozens of greens supplements, we wanted to create a guide breaking down what to look for, which ones are worth your money, and what to avoid.

What are Greens Supplements?

The term "greens" refers to any type of supplement that contains ingredients such as wheatgrass, barley grass, alfalfa sprouts, kale, spinach leaves, and other leafy green vegetables. The idea behind these types of drinks is that by consuming them on a regular basis you can increase your nutrient intake without having to change anything else about your diet or lifestyle.

They're intended to be a convenient way to round out your diet and get more of the nutrients, fiber, and antioxidants that are common in leafy greens, fruits, and vegetables. They should never replace real food but can be a decent boost to your diet.

What Red Flags Should You Avoid?

There is a wide variety of greens available on the market, and you should always seek to match the supplements you buy to your individual needs. That's why we've broken them down into categories below. Any greens supplement that claims to be a cure-all for every possible ailment or deficiency is one you should be skeptical of.

Additionally, if you see the word "detox" or phrases like "supports detoxification," you should probably avoid it. The term "detox," in the supplement world, is a virtually-meaningless buzzword. If you have functioning kidneys and liver, then a supplement is not going to help you detox. If you don't, a supplement still won't help, but you probably are already working with a doctor whose told you that.

Finally, be cautious of proprietary blends. Proprietary blends aren't always bad. For example, Amino Co products use proprietary blends but are able to back up their patented blends with years of clinical research. However, not all companies can back up their blends– many use them as a marketing gimmick to disguise how much of specific nutrients, minerals, or compounds you are actually getting.

With those notes out of the way, let's take a look at the greens supplements we love.

Our Favorite Greens Supplement

To pick our overall favorite greens supplement, we evaluated a few factors: nutrient inclusion, price, taste, and ingredient quality. Coming out on top was the Swolverine Greens + Reds supplement.

Swolverine Greens + Reds

This delicious greens supplement is packed with leafy greens and antioxidant-rich fruits to provide a supplement that is well-rounded, low in sugars, and delightful to drink– all without costing an arm and a leg.

Who Should Buy Swolverine Greens + Reds?

From Swolverine's website

Greens + Reds contains powerfully rich organic super greens from land and sea like Spirulina, Chlorella, Wheat Grass, and reds including Organic beets, Pomegranate, Bilberry, Blueberry and Organic Turmeric to improve your energy levels, power your athletic performance, bridge the gaps in your daily diet, and promote overall health and wellness.

Because of these ingredients, Swolverine's product would be ideal for someone who:

  • Already has a decently well-rounded diet but wants to fill gaps in their fruit and veggie intake.
  • Wants something quick and convenient that doesn't have to be carefully timed (as opposed to other greens supplements which recommend drinking while fasted or prior to any caffeine consumption).
  • Is looking for a digestive and athletic performance boost rather than a supplement to counteract specific deficiencies.
Swolverine would not be ideal for:
  • Someone who needs a high intake of trace minerals like iron, potassium, or calcium (i.e. it can't take the place of a multi-vitamin).
  • Someone who wants a high-protein greens supplement.

Best Greens for Digestive Health

Another great benefit of greens superfood supplements is that they can be good for digestive health. Most leafy greens are naturally high in fiber and when combined with a supplement that is rich with prebiotics and probiotics, you've got a winning combo for a happy colon (now there's a phrase I never thought I'd write).

Our pick for the Greens Supplement that's best suited for digestive health is Transparent Labs

Transparent labs Prebiotic greens

My favorite thing about Transparent Labs is their promise that, "you'll always find 100% formula transparency, with included science-based ingredients at clinically effective dosages." Their prebiotic greens supplement lives up to this claim well.

Transparent Labs' Prebiotic Greens is ideal for someone who:

  • Struggles with regularity, gas, bloating, or a sluggish digestive system.
  • Wants immune system support as a key aspect of their greens supplement.
  • Values ingredient transparency.

Transparent Labs' Prebiotic Greens is NOT ideal for someone who:

  • Wants a flavor that conceals the ingredients. We haven't tried the peach mango, so we can't speak to that, but the unflavored variety is a little bit earthy. It's not bad, but it also doesn't make pretenses about being delicious.
  • Needs a high intake of trace minerals like iron, potassium, or calcium (i.e. it can't take the place of a multi-vitamin).

Most Nutrient-Dense Greens Supplement

If you're looking for a greens supplement that can (likely) take the place of your daily multivitamin, you're not going to find a better option than the Phramafreak Greens Freak+. This supplement puts the super in superfoods.

The main drawback to this particular supplement is that they do leverage several proprietary blends. As we mentioned above, proprietary blends can be a bit deceptive at times. However, this underrated greens supplement still gets our endorsement in spite of its use of proprietary blends. It's incredibly well-rounded from a nutrient density perspective, and it's reasonably affordable. The flavors, in my opinion, are a bit odd, but they're not unpleasant and I don't think you'd have trouble getting it down.

This greens supplement is ideal for someone who:

  • Wants an all-in-one solution from their greens that covers their main nutritional bases.

This greens supplement is Not ideal for someone who:

  • Likes subtle flavors– I found the flavor options to be a bit intense, but not in a bad way. I just prefer lighter flavors with my supplement drinks.

Best Budget-Friendly Option

While none of our selections today clock in at the high-end of the greens superfood supplements spectrum (e.g. Athletic Greens, which will cost you roughly $100 to $120/month, depending upon shipping costs), I still like to include an option that is on the cheaper side of the scale.

For our best budget-friendly option, I give it to Jacked Factory Greens Surge, which runs a cool $25.

Jacked Factory is one of my favorite supplement brands, and their greens product is pretty solid. It's not quite as nutrient dense as other options, but it's still high quality and low cost.

Jacked Factory Greens Surge is Ideal for someone who

  • Wants a convenient, cheap greens supplement that they can take regularly.
  • Mainly wants to add more green vegetable intake to their diet.
  • Wants a product that's readily available and cost-effective.

Jacked Factory Greens Surge is Not Ideal for someone who

  • Wants a greens supplement that can replace their daily multi-vitamin.
  • Doesn't like sweet greens supplements (the flavor is almost like bubblegum).

Conclusion

None of the options we've listed above will do you wrong. We quite like each of the supplements listed above, otherwise, we wouldn't recommend them. Regardless of what greens supplement you choose, getting more leafy green vegetables, antioxidants, and fiber in your diet is never going to be a bad thing.
